If you're visiting San Francisco for the annual Gay Parade and your favorite exclusively gay/lesbian hotel is all booked up, our personal recommendation is the Ramada Inn Plaza on Market Street. We usually book a room there when we visit during June because it's a delightful place to stay. It's within walking distance of the parade route and the festivities at City Hall. With a restaurant and Starbuck's coffee shop in the building and easy access to public transportation nearby, it's a very convenient place to stay. It's housed in a beautiful old building that was built after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating to its gay and lesbian customers.

Note of Caution About Parking: If you are visiting during Gay Pride, be sure not to park on any of the surrounding streets the night before the parade. If you do, you'll have your car towed away (as we unfortunately found out). If the Ramada parking lot is full, there is a motel accross the street that allows for overflow parking for Ramada guests (be sure to confirm that your parking situation is acceptable when you check in).

Some Friendly Advice If You Have Your Car Towed: If this happens, you'll need to trek down to the San Francisco Hall of Justice (best to take a cab) to pay your fines and have your car removed from the impound lot, which is just underneath a freeway overpass. I did the math, and it cost just as much to have it impounded there as it would have to pay for parking for several days in any of the paid garages. So, to make a long story short, it was easiest to just forget about it and leave it in the impound until we were ready to leave. Less hassle of finding parking that way, and at least you know your car is safely locked up!
